Course Title: Intermediate Spanish Transition
Redesign Coordinator: Dolly Young

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville redesigned Intermediate Spanish Transition, an introductory language course enrolling more than 60% of entering students as a result of language placement scores. During the 1999-2000 academic year, the course enrolled 1,539 students in 57 sections with 27 students per class. The traditional course structure was unable to provide enough sections to satisfy enrollment demands. The redesign substituted online diagnostic homework exercises (grammar, vocabulary, and graded workbook assignments) for one in-class period per week. Immediate feedback on all graded assignments was given via online assessments. This eliminated the extremely time-consuming activity of grading homework exercises, quizzes, and examinations for instructors. Rather than dealing with skill-based practice in class, instructors had more time to emphasize active speaking skills and cultural awareness. Any-time access to course materials and immediate feedback on progress were designed to assist students in self-paced work and understanding of their deficiencies. The redesign was expected to produce cost savings by offering one-third more sections of the course with significantly reduced labor costs, resulting in a cost-per-student reduction from $109 to $28. Cost savings were anticipated to total approximately $110,236 annually while serving 513 additional students. The results of the completed redesign can be found by following the links listed below under Final Report.
