Sustainability

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Will the redesign be sustained now that the grant period is over?

Two issues affect sustainability. First, at present, all instructors teaching in this sequence are adjunct faculty, which implies a significant turnover rate. The critical issue is whether the specific knowledge embedded in the redesign can be readily transferred to the next instructor. As long as the turnover is staggered and experienced TAs are retained within the sequence and assigned to the new instructor, there is every reason to believe that the approach can be sustained. A second issue relates to the half-life of the Mallard software. It is not clear whether, for example, WebCT could be substituted for Mallard as it is used in this project. The belief is that the campus as a whole is so committed to online quizzing as a sensible approach in high-enrollment courses that some still-unknown solution will emerge to resolve this problem.
