State and System Course Redesign:
Ohio Learning Network (OLN )
2004 – 2006
In partnership with the National Center for Academic Transformation, the Ohio Learning Network (OLN) established a course redesign program for its member public and private institutions that built on the successful models and lessons learned from the Program in Course Redesign (PCR). OLN provided institutional grants of approximately $40,000 to assist with implementation of the redesign plans. OLN had had a long-standing faculty development effort aimed at increasing the use of technology in teaching. This new initiative focused on the need to contain instructional costs while increasing student learning.
OLN launched its statewide competition entitled, "Technology Innovation Course Redevelopment Grants," in August 2004 and issued an invitation to participate to all member institutions. Twenty-eight interested institutions sent teams to a one-day workshop led by NCAT and then worked with NCAT as needed to develop course redesign proposals. Sixteen institutions submitted proposals. A review committee of representatives from the OLN Technology Advisory Committee and NCAT ranked proposals and selected nine projects to be funded. Teams from the nine institutions met at a second workshop jointly led by NCAT and OLN to discuss potential implementation issues. For most projects, pilots of the course redesigns occurred in summer 2005 with full implementation in fall 2005.
