State and System Course Redesign
University System of Maryland: Maryland Course Redesign Initiative (2006 – 2009)

The Maryland Course Redesign Initiative is a major academic Effectiveness and Efficiency initiative planned and implemented by USM institutions under the leadership of the USM Office of the Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. This effort has been undertaken in collaboration with the National Center for Academic Transformation (NCAT), building on the successful models and lessons learned from NCAT’s Program in Course Redesign and Roadmap to Redesign. This initiative is consistent with the recommendation of the Spellings Commission on The Future of Higher Education:

"We urge states and institutions to establish course redesign programs using technology-based, learner-centered principles drawing upon the innovative work already being done by organizations such as the National Center for Academic Transformation."

The USM is the first systemwide initiative adhering to this recommendation. Each USM institution will redesign at least one course. During the 2006-2007 academic year, the program expects to provide $20,000 in funding per USM institution to match $20,000 from the institution itself for a total of $40,000 to support one large-scale redesign at each institution.
