Labor Saving Techniques

University of Central Florida

Given that a major goal of the course re-design project is to substitute technology "capital" for faculty teaching "labor," in what particular aspects of the course and its delivery are you finding that you are able to do this?

Capital for labor substitutions were not part of the UCF proposal. Rather, the UCF proposal centered on using technology, in this case the World Wide Web, as a vehicle for delivering portions of a high enrollment general education course. These online course portions would substitute for face-to-face classroom instruction, thus, saving precious classroom space enabling two or three courses to be scheduled into the same classroom space where only one section or course could be scheduled. As a result of this project, cost savings will be realized through more efficient use of classroom space and a reduction in rented space by the university. The realization of a reduction of rented classroom space will be seen during the second and third years of the project and beyond.
